Grimace comes to town

Good Ol' Boys and a Girl Flyer

My good friends Mike, Meagan, and Brandon comprise a bluegrass band called The Good Ol' boys and a Girl. Brandon has joined the Navy and is shipping off soon, so for time being the band in its current form is taking a hiatus. Mike asked me to make a flyer for their farewell show as well as adapt the logo I made for them some years ago into a design that could easily be applied to a T-shirt. I love bluegrass music and always try to support my friends in everything they do, so naturally I am happy to be a part of this goodbye celebration, just as I have been happy to make it to as many of their shows as humanly possible for the last few years. They have made quite a name for themselves here in Huntington and scored many great venues, including opening up for the legendary Jesco White at his own farewell show.

Mario's Closet Print now available from Gallery 1988

The signed and numbered Mario's Closet prints are now available from Gallery 1988. You can buy one from their online store! The prints sell for $60 and are in a limited edition of 100.

New Art Added

The art section is now up to date with all the art I've done in the last several months, with lots of pieces added to the illustration, work, and Splitreason sections.

Perhaps the only piece I added that hasn't been previously featured on this blog is the second banner I did for the Autumn Society website, so you can now see both of them here. The one that hasn't yet been used has a Mario 3 flavor to it.

I also updated my resume with new press and freelance listings, and the store now has a few new products.

Lastly, I added a Now Available section on the right side of this page to showcase the Mario's Closet posters (and the signed prints which are coming very soon.) The main reason I did this is because I continue to get plenty of emails about the posters. I am trying my best to put the word out that they are available, so bear with me!

Front Magazine Illustration

Here's a piece that's been eating up a good deal of my time lately. I was commissioned by Front Magazine to do an illustration for an article they're doing on video game violence. Front is sort of a Maxim-type magazine in the UK, but as you know Europe is more lax on nudity than we are here in the states, so if you check out their website be ready for a lot of attractive, curvy, not-safe-for-work fun.

They were really specific on what they wanted in the piece which I really appreciated. I love it when someone knows what they want, makes my life much easier! The challenge here was that I wasn't very familiar with a few of the games. Sub Zero standing proudly with Raiden's head should be obvious to most, as should The Punisher. The chainsaw scene is from Resident Evil 4, which I haven't played but I am of course aware of. The diseased cow head is from Postal 2, the fat woman being fed pig guts is from a game called Phantasmagoria, and the midget on stilts is from Thrill Kill. The last three I hadn't really heard of, so I had to do a bit of research. I provided them with a file that will allow them to fudge the placement of the characters some, as I imagine some text will be going in there somewhere, so the final piece will differ from this one. I'll be sure to post a picture when I get my hands on the magazine.

It's a funny thing to get an email that asks if you can draw a fat woman being fed pig entrails from a canister and make it look humorous.

My latest shirt design is up for voting now, so head over and vote!

For whatever reason I wasn't sure if this one would be received very well or not, but so far the comments seem to be quite positive. Personally this is among my favorite shirt designs I've ever done, so obviously I hope it gets printed! I think part of the reason I like this one so much is that it appeals to my weird affinity for making ads and branding for fictional products. Well-known examples of fake brands include Big kahuna Burger in Tarantino movies, Nails Cigarettes in Kevin Smith Movies, and Krusty-O's, Squishees, and about a thousand other things in The Simpsons. In fact, I saw an interview once where Matt Greoning also expressed a fascination with creating brands to populate his cartoon universe. He even said his desire for wanting to make an animated show came from realizing that you could have cartoon characters sit and watch other cartoons in their living room (an idea that manifests itself on the show as Itchy and Scratchy.)

Designing this kinda stuff for movies seems like it would be a great job.
