Streetworks 2012

Here's my piece for this year's Streetworks project.

For the last four years, East End Main Street has asked local Charleston, WV artists to contribute original pieces of art to their Streetworks project. In past years the artwork has been put on banners and bricks which have been displayed on the east end of the city, and this year the art will be featured on 36" round metal signs that will be hung on the light poles that line Washington street.

I wanted to do a design that made sense as a sign, and I drew inspiration from those old postcard designs that every city seems to have where the city name is in large block letters and various landmarks are shown. I tried to pick imagery that was iconic to Charleston; things that are instantly recognizable to people who live here.

The signs will go up later this month, and framed versions of the pieces will be auctioned off on Sunday, June 17 at 5:30 PM at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Please stop by if you are in the Charleston area! It's a great social event in support of the arts, with food, music, and door prizes in addition to the auction.
