3D Photos

I'm in a bit of a holding pattern today while I wait for some info on my next project, so I made this to pass some time.

My friend jokes that whenever I get a new gadget I have to push it to its limits and see what it's capable of, and I guess that's true. Once I had the idea to take pictures of red/blue 3D images with the 3DS' camera I had to try it out, and sure enough it worked. I wanted to make some sort of simple guide on how to do it, so here you go.

The ability to take 3D photos with this thing is amazing to me, I think there are tons of possibilities that have yet to be explored. Like maybe setting up dioramas or even figuring out a way to create and view artificially 3D images and artwork (something like a still frame from an animated 3D movie.) Here's hoping some websites crop up in the future dedicated to this purpose.

  1. I need catch up on this "3D" technology. :D

I really wanted a 3DS when it was first announced, but not knowing what games it would have, my interest waned.

Tell me Glenbi-Wan Kenobi... is it worth it, in your opinion, or should I wait until the obligatory price drop in December?

  2. I think it's worth it, though many people aren't completely satisfied with the lack of big-name titles available for it right now.

I don't see any problem with waiting a few months for more games and the launch of the online services, but it's such a different experience, I think people should give it a shot.

What's funny is that most people seem to have your same attitude of waiting for a price drop or a new version. I think it's interesting that this marketing strategy of different versions of consoles is starting to backfire a bit.

  3. I don't have a 3DS yet, but I'll get one eventually -- and when I do, I'll give this a try.

Thanks for making the handy-dandy instructional illustration, by the way :)

  4. @Glen: You make a good point about the marketing strategy. Before the past couple years I would've jumped straight into the fire for one of these bad boys.

I have to admit though, taking 3D pictures with it is pretty damn cool!
