Big F**king Deal!

This is really cracking me up. As you may or may not know, when Obama signed the health care bill Joe Biden leaned in to him and said "This is a big fucking deal!" which was audible over the mics and went out live to the TV viewing audience.

My cousin immediately snapped up the domain name thisisabigfuckingdeal.com and threw up a clip of the incident, as well as links to some merchandise including my Change Chomp shirt. The site has already been featured on CBSnews.com and businessinsider.com among others!

Oh, and something else I found funny: If you have read my site for a while you know that I created that Change Chomp shirt to correct what I believe is a misconception that the famous sticker on Obama's laptop is a Pac-man, since it more closely resembles a Chain Chomp. Well, even with the new design I made, the author of one of the articles about my cousin's site mentions that you can buy a "Pac-man" shirt, hah!

The Prints are Doing Well

The second banner I made for the Autumn Society home page is now up on their site.

And this is the second half of the signed Mario's Closet prints awaiting the Fedex guy. These are being overnighted because the first half of the prints have already sold out! They didn't anticipate them going so quickly so these need to get to California fast. They also said that it is pretty uncommon for prints to sell at that rate, so I thank everybody who has bought one! Orders are still coming in so if you are on the fence about buying one and still haven't done so, I recommend it now!

Also I just got a box in from Splitreason with all kinds of Mario's Closet goodies, and I have to say that the poster looks amazing. I was very impressed, and I'm one who is quite finicky about print quality. So if the signed print is a bit out of your range you can always grab the poster here.

Grimace comes to town

Here are a few things I've received in tribute to my Grimace shirt.

RFC 95 "Glen Brogan's Visible Grimace Shirt"

RFC Archives | MySpace Music Videos

Rudy Panucci wore the shirt for this episode of his show Radio Free Charleston (and named the episode after it too!)

A friend of a friend that I've never even met, just a coincidence that he bought the shirt.

Mary, my cousin's wife.

And don't forget, this is the month that Uncle O'grimacey comes to McDonalds to bring you green milkshakes...

Good Ol' Boys and a Girl Flyer

My good friends Mike, Meagan, and Brandon comprise a bluegrass band called The Good Ol' boys and a Girl. Brandon has joined the Navy and is shipping off soon, so for time being the band in its current form is taking a hiatus. Mike asked me to make a flyer for their farewell show as well as adapt the logo I made for them some years ago into a design that could easily be applied to a T-shirt. I love bluegrass music and always try to support my friends in everything they do, so naturally I am happy to be a part of this goodbye celebration, just as I have been happy to make it to as many of their shows as humanly possible for the last few years. They have made quite a name for themselves here in Huntington and scored many great venues, including opening up for the legendary Jesco White at his own farewell show.

New Art Added

The art section is now up to date with all the art I've done in the last several months, with lots of pieces added to the illustration, work, and Splitreason sections.

Perhaps the only piece I added that hasn't been previously featured on this blog is the second banner I did for the Autumn Society website, so you can now see both of them here. The one that hasn't yet been used has a Mario 3 flavor to it.

I also updated my resume with new press and freelance listings, and the store now has a few new products.

Lastly, I added a Now Available section on the right side of this page to showcase the Mario's Closet posters (and the signed prints which are coming very soon.) The main reason I did this is because I continue to get plenty of emails about the posters. I am trying my best to put the word out that they are available, so bear with me!

Front Magazine Illustration

Here's a piece that's been eating up a good deal of my time lately. I was commissioned by Front Magazine to do an illustration for an article they're doing on video game violence. Front is sort of a Maxim-type magazine in the UK, but as you know Europe is more lax on nudity than we are here in the states, so if you check out their website be ready for a lot of attractive, curvy, not-safe-for-work fun.

They were really specific on what they wanted in the piece which I really appreciated. I love it when someone knows what they want, makes my life much easier! The challenge here was that I wasn't very familiar with a few of the games. Sub Zero standing proudly with Raiden's head should be obvious to most, as should The Punisher. The chainsaw scene is from Resident Evil 4, which I haven't played but I am of course aware of. The diseased cow head is from Postal 2, the fat woman being fed pig guts is from a game called Phantasmagoria, and the midget on stilts is from Thrill Kill. The last three I hadn't really heard of, so I had to do a bit of research. I provided them with a file that will allow them to fudge the placement of the characters some, as I imagine some text will be going in there somewhere, so the final piece will differ from this one. I'll be sure to post a picture when I get my hands on the magazine.

It's a funny thing to get an email that asks if you can draw a fat woman being fed pig entrails from a canister and make it look humorous.

Mushroom Kingdom Pizza

My latest shirt design is up for voting now, so head over and vote!

For whatever reason I wasn't sure if this one would be received very well or not, but so far the comments seem to be quite positive. Personally this is among my favorite shirt designs I've ever done, so obviously I hope it gets printed! I think part of the reason I like this one so much is that it appeals to my weird affinity for making ads and branding for fictional products. Well-known examples of fake brands include Big kahuna Burger in Tarantino movies, Nails Cigarettes in Kevin Smith Movies, and Krusty-O's, Squishees, and about a thousand other things in The Simpsons. In fact, I saw an interview once where Matt Greoning also expressed a fascination with creating brands to populate his cartoon universe. He even said his desire for wanting to make an animated show came from realizing that you could have cartoon characters sit and watch other cartoons in their living room (an idea that manifests itself on the show as Itchy and Scratchy.)

Designing this kinda stuff for movies seems like it would be a great job.
